- 1.0 Introduction
-
- This file contains last-minute updates that are not found in the User's
- Guide or in any addendum accompanying the display adapter. Please read
- this file before proceeding with the installation.
-
- For information on running the INSTALL program please refer to the following
- sections in your User's Guide:
-
- "CONFIGURING YOUR CARD"
- "RUNNING THE INSTALL PROGRAM"
-
- GENERAL INFO for NEW INSTALLATIONS:
-
- - In order to match the card to your monitor and to your system
- configuration you must run "SET POWER UP CONFIGURATION" before installing
- any drivers
- - Please refer to "MAIN SELECTION MENU" in your User's Manual.
- - After running "SET POWER UP CONFIGURATION", run Install Device Drivers
- and EXIT back to DOS.

- GENERAL INFO FOR UPDATE INSTALLATIONS:
-
- If you are updating from a previous version of the mach32 Windows Driver
- we suggest that:
-
- A) You make a backup of you current WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI prior to
- installation
-
- B) You use the UNINSTALL WINDOWS DRIVER Option before installing the
- the new drivers. The UNINSTALL will remove any previous mach32 settings.
-
- UNINSTALL PROCESS:
-
- a) Run the "INSTALL" program by inserting Disk #1 of the supplied mach32
- disks into the appropriate disk drive and run the INSTALL program.
-
- b) On the Main Menu Screen select the "INSTALL DEVICE DRIVER" and press
- ENTER.
-
- c) From the "Install Device Drivers" pop-up menu select
- "Microsoft Windows"
-
- d) After confirmation of directory and paths you will be presented with
- the "Windows Enhanced" pop-up menu. From this menu, select the
- appropriate "Uninstall" option and follow the directions on the Screen.
-
- ****************************
-
- 2.0 Adapter Installation
-
- Adapter installation, while greatly simplified through the mach32 INSTALL
- utility, requires a step by step methodical approach to ensure that the
- adapter does not conflict with other system resources and that it will
- provide optimal performance.
-
- The following technical information is a basic outline of the steps required
- to install a mach32 graphics adapter.
-
- 1) The mach32 requires port addresses 2E0-2EF and 3A0-3DF. It also uses
- C0000-C7FFF for VGA BIOS.
-
- Check the system hardware for internal modems, FAX cards or LAN cards
- which may be using addresses at COM4 (2E8) or addresses between the
- range of 2E0 to 2EF.
-
- Also ensure that LAN cards, scanner cards and other peripheral adapters
- are not using upper memory addresses between C000 and C7FF.
-
- If you have a system containing an on-board graphics controller, consult
- your owners manual on how to disable it.
-
- Check and record how much system memory is installed on the system
- motherboard.
-
- 2) Review your CONFIG.SYS file to determine if a Memory Manager device
- driver is being loaded.
-
- Memory Manager device drivers, such as EMM386, QEMM and 386MAX, may
- interfere with the installation software and should not be loaded
- until the mach32 graphics adapter has been completely installed
-
- 3) After powering down your system, remove your old graphics adapter (or
- disable the on-board graphics controller) and plug-in the mach32.
-
- Connect the monitor cable and mouse cable (if applicable) to the
- mach32 card and power-up the system.
-
- NOTE: Not all mach32 cards have built-in Mouse ports.
-
- If the system fails to produce text on the monitor, return to Step 1
- and re-check the installed hardware for address conflicts.
-
- If no obvious conflicts are present, carefully remove all non-
- essential peripheral adapters (scanner, FAX/modem, audio, CD ROM cards,
- etc.) to determine the nature of the conflict.
-
- As a last resort, if possible, see if the card works in a different
- system.
-
- 4) Once the system has properly booted, place Disk #1 of the supplied mach32
- disks into the appropriate disk drive and run the INSTALL program.
-
- The INSTALL program may report that it has found the graphics card to
- be in a "new or changed configuration". If this message appears, press
- any key to have the INSTALL program update the mach32 EEPROM.
-
- NOTE: The screen will flicker for a few seconds during a configuration
- change.
-
- If the INSTALL program returns to DOS and states that it could not find
- a mach32 based graphics card in the system, return to Step 3 to remove
- any memory manager device driver from your CONFIG.SYS file.
-
-
- ****************************
-
- 3.0 Installation Notes for Windows 3.1
-
- 1) Run INSTALL from Disk #1 of the mach32 diskettes.
-
- 2) Select Install Device Drivers from the Main Selection Menu.
-
- 3) From the Install Device Drivers menu select Microsoft Windows.
-
- 4) Select INSTALL Windows 3.1 driver:
-
- a) Select Display Drivers only
- - if you have NOT installed Windows based multimedia applications
- (e.g. Multimedia CD-ROMS, Video editing packages)
-
- b) Select Display Drivers + Video drivers
- - if you have installed Windows based multimedia applications
- (e.g. Multimedia CD-ROMS, Video editing packages)
- - Note: INSTALL will not successfully install the Video drivers
- unless it detects that Video for Windows has already been installed.
-
- 5) Follow the screen instructions to completion.
-
- 6) When INSTALL reports that the driver has been successfully installed,
- exit the INSTALL program using the <escape> key.
-
- 7) Start Windows, use the mach FlexDesk Control Panel icon to configure
- Windows for the desired resolution and color depth.
-
- Note: If you wish to change the Windows' display driver, to a different
- driver (i.e. VGA or 8514a), do not use the Windows' Setup icon within
- Windows. To change the display, exit Windows and change directory
- to the Windows subdirectory. When at the Windows prompt type SETUP
- and select the desired display driver.
-
- For further information regarding the mach32 Windows functions please use
- MS Write to read the MACH32.WRI file. This Write file is copied to the
- Windows directory specified during install.
-
- 3.1 Multimedia Video Acceleration
-
- In order to take advantage of ATI's Multimedia Video Acceleration, you will
- require one of the following:
-
- - Microsoft Video for Windows 1.0 or 1.1
- - Microsoft Video for Windows 1.1 run-time
-
- Follow the Installation Notes for Windows 3.1 and select Display Drivers
- + Video driver to enable Multimedia Video Acceleration.
-
- ****************************

- 4.0 Installation Notes for AutoDesk products
-
- Note: The following applications are supported:
- AutoCAD R10-386, R11, R12, R13; 3D Studio R1.0, R2.0, R3.0, R4.0
- and AutoShade 386 with Renderman.
-
- The CAD drivers provided are developed by Panacea Inc. exclusively for use with
- ATI's family of mach32 accelerators. Do not attempt to use these drivers on
- non-mach32 based products.
-
- 1) Run INSTALL from Disk #1 of the mach32 diskettes.
-
- 2) Select Install Device Drivers from the Main Selection Menu.
-
- 3) From the Install Device Drivers menu select one of the following:
-
- AutoCAD
- AutoDesk 3D Studio
- AutoShade
-
- 4) Follow the screen instructions to completion.
-
- 5) When the INSTALL reports that the driver has been successfully installed,
- hit <escape> to exit the INSTALL program.
-
- 6) All the AutoDesk products require environment variables to be loaded
- prior to starting the application. The INSTALL program creates
- batch files that contain all the necessary SET statements. These
- batch files will be located in the directory specified during the
- driver installation. The following are the default batch file names:
-
- AutoCAD R10, R11 ADIACAD.BAT
- AutoDesk 3D Studio R2 ADI3DS.BAT
- AutoShade with Renderman ADISHADE.BAT
-
- 7) After running the appropriate batch file, refer to your AutoDesk
- documentation for information on how to select and reconfigure the
- display driver.
-
- For further details, please see README.DLD after installing the drivers.
-
- ****************************

- 5.0 Installation Notes for OS/2
-
- Note:
-
- Prior to driver installation ensure that the mach32 graphics board has
- been configured correctly:
-
- a) OS/2 requires that the 640x480 resolution be configured for the IBM
- default 60Hz vertical refresh rate.
- b) You must configure the card for all resolutions that your monitor
- can support in order to have them functioning correctly under OS/2.
- Only those resolutions that you have configured will display
- correctly.
-

- 1. Check the Windows List (press CTRL-ESC) to see if you have any
- WIN-OS/2 or DOS sessions iconized. Close them all as the INSTALL
- may fail if a WIN-OS/2 session is running.
-
- Note: Do not task switch while running the INSTALL program.
-
- 2. Insert disk #1 and run INSTALL from within a full screen DOS session
- under OS/2 and check the "Set Power-Up Configuration" to ensure that
- you have selected an appropriate monitor type:
-
- a) OS/2 requires the 640x480 resolution to be configured for the
- IBM default 60Hz vertical refresh rate.
- b) You must configure the card for all resolutions that your
- monitor can support in order to have them functioning
- correctly under OS/2.
-

- 3. From the INSTALL Main Selection Menu, select 'Install Device Drivers'
- and pick 'IBM OS/2' Then follow the instructions given on the screen.
-
- Note: If PM Desktop does not reappear after exiting from the full
- screen DOS session, pressing <Enter> will bring you back to full
- screen. If this occurs, you must reboot to get back to the PM Desktop.
-
- 4. Run DSPINSTL from within an OS/2 window.
-
- 5. When the 'Display Driver Install' panel appears, check 'Primary Display'
- and click OK to bring up a list of choices. You should see an option
- for ATI mach32.
-
- 6. Select 'ATI mach32 (Enhanced V2.6)' from the list and click OK. If
- the error message "The installed adapter does not support the
- selected display driver. Do you wish to continue?" appears, ignore
- it and click OK.
-
- 7. When the source directory panel appears, select 'Change' and enter
- x:\MACH_OS2 (where x: is your OS/2 boot drive) Click 'Set' and
- then 'Install'. After the files are copied, exit the OS/2 window or
- full screen session. Shut down and restart your system.
-
- 8. The PM driver will first come up in 640x480, 256 colors mode. Use the
- following steps to change the screen resolutions or number of colors:
-
- a) Open 'OS/2 System' icon.
- b) Open 'System Setup' icon.
- c) Open 'System' icon.
- d) Select the 'Screen' tab.
- e) Select the desired resolution and colors from the list.
- f) Double click on the system menu icon or select close from the
- system menu to close the window.
- g) Shut down and restart your system.

- the MACH_OS2 directory. To view the ATI README.CMD:
- a) Open a OS/2 session
- b) Change directory to \MACH_OS2
- c) Type README

- 6.0 Installation Notes for WordPerfect
-
- WordPerfect drivers support 800x600 and 1024x768 resolutions in 16 colors,
- VGA mode for Print Preview.
-
- 1) Make sure that WordPerfect has already been installed on your hard drive.
-
- 2) To complete the install successfully, you will require the following
- information:
-
- a) The full path name of the WordPerfect directory.
-
- 3) From the Install Device Drivers menu select WORDPERFECT.
-
- 4) Select WordPerfect and follow the screen instructions to completion.
-
- 5) When the INSTALL reports that the driver has been successfully installed,
- exit the program.
-
- 6) Change directory to the WordPerfect subdirectory and run WordPerfect.
-
- 7) Select display driver in Setup option <shift><F1>.
-
- 8) Press <D> for Display.
-
- 9) Press <G> for Graphics Screen Type.
-
- 10) Select the desired resolution.
-

- 7.0 Installation Notes for Microsoft Word
-
- Microsoft Word drivers support 800x600 and 1024x768 resolutions in 16
- colors, VGA mode for Print Preview.
-
- 1) Make sure that Word has already been installed on your hard drive.
-
- 2) To complete the install successfully, you will require the following
- information:
-
- a) The full path name of the Word for DOS directory.
-
- 3) From the Install Device Drivers menu select MICROSOFT WORD.
-
- 4) Select Microsoft Word from the menu and follow the screen instructions
- to completion.
-
- 5) When INSTALL reports that the driver has been successfully installed,
- exit the program.
-
- 6) Change to your Word directory and start Word.
-
- 7) Word's print preview function will automatically use the highest
- resolution installed.
-
- Note: If the high resolution page preview mode is not available, (i.e.
- the mach32 has not been configured to support high resolutions)
- the VGA 640x480 16 color mode will be used.
-
- ****************************

- 8.0 Installation Notes for MicroStation
-
- 1) Make sure MicroStation has already been installed on your hard drive.
-
- 2) To complete the install successfully, you will require the following
- information:
-
- a) The full path name of the MicroStation directory.
-
- 3) From the Install Device Drivers menu select MicroStation.
-
- 4) When INSTALL has completed copying all necessary files, exit the
- program.
-
- 5) Reboot the system (if you allowed INSTALL to modify autoexec.bat). If
- you have created a batch file for the set environment, run the .BAT file.
-
- 6) Change directory to the MicroStation subdirectory and run USCONFIG.EXE.
-
- 7) Refer to the README.USD file for further information regarding how to
- use the enhanced features. This readme file is copied to the
- MicroStation DRIVERS subdirectory during the drivers install.
-
- ****************************

- 9.0 Driver Compatibility
-
- The mach32 accelerator supports more software drivers than any other
- graphics card. This flexibility means that the mach32 accelerator is
- compatible with virtually any software application right out-of-the-box.
- The supported drivers are:
-
- * mach32
- * VGAWONDER+
- * IBM VGA
- * VESA Super VGA
-
- These drivers differ by the degree of acceleration, resolution and colors
- supported.
-
-
- ****************************
-
- 10.0 Turbo Application Interface
-
- The mach32 Turbo Adapter Interface (Turbo AI) is a programming interface
- written exclusively for the mach32 accelerator chip. This AI provides
- access to the mach32 graphics controller by providing a "call interface"
- to programs performing display functions in the 8514/A-compatible part
- of the graphics card. This Turbo AI is 100% compatible with the IBM 8514/A
- adapter interface.
-
- The Turbo AI is only supported on 2MB Graphics Wonder product. Attempting
- to use the Turbo AI on a 1MB card may result in displays problems.
-
- Any application that needs an AI will ask for a TSR (Terminate-and-Stay-
- Resident) program called HDILOAD.EXE. This TSR is supplied on a diskette
- that comes with your mach32 accelerator. Install this TSR only if you use
- applications that specifically use an 8514/A adapter interface.
-
- There are two categories of software drivers that support the IBM 8514/A
- graphics adapter -- Direct-to-Registers and Adapter Interface. They are
- described as follows:
-
- Direct-to-Registers:
- The direct-to-registers driver writes directly to the registers of the
- graphics controller. Examples of such applications are MS Windows and
- IBM OS/2 Presentation.
-
- Adapter Interface
- Many applications access the 8514/A graphics controller using a software
- interface called the 8514 Adapter Interface (AI). Examples are Lotus 1-2-3,
- WordPerfect, and Turbo Pascal. These and many other applications use the AI
- to eliminate the need for separate graphics drivers for different
- applications. Contact your application program vendor for information on
- AI support.

- Installing the Turbo AI:
- 1. Run the mach32 INSTALL program to bring up the Main Selection Menu.
- 2. Select Install Adapter Interface from the menu.
- 3. Although the AI files can be copied to any directory on the hard
- drive, certain applications require that the AI must be in a
- directory called \HDIPCDOS. We recommend that you accept \HDIPCDOS
- as prompted by the installation program. If this directory does not
- exist on the drive, one will be created. Press<Enter> to continue.
- 4. Accept the Source (drive and directory) as prompted, or type in
- the location where these files can be found. Insert the appropriate
- disk and press <Enter> to start copying.
- 5. The installation program attempts to modify your PATH statement to
- include the AI directory. It also attempts to add a line in the
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that the AI is loaded automatically on every
- power-up. Press <Y> if you want the AI in the PATH and automatic
- loading.
- 6. When the AI installation is complete, press <Esc> to exit.
-
- Using the Turbo AI:
- If you prefer to load the Turbo AI manually, type:
- C:\HDIPCDOS\HDILOAD\<Enter>
- To unload the Turbo AI, type:
- C:\HDIPCDOS\HDILOAD\UNLOAD<Enter>
-
- Note
- - Application programs that use "AI" will display an error message if the
- AI is not present prior to starting the application.
- - The order of TSR program unloading (if you have more than one) from DOS
- memory is important. The last TSR loaded must be the first one you unload.
- Therefore, HDILOAD must be the last TSR loaded in order for you to unload
- it successfully.

- 11.0 VGA Feature Connector
-
- The VGA feature connector is provided on mach32 graphics accelerators
- for the purpose of passing display information to optional add-in products
- such as TV or video playback (overlay) boards. The VGA feature connector
- is limited to 640x480, 256 colors attempting a use a resolution or color
- depth above that may cause display problems
-
- If the mach32 is installed in a PCI slot, palette snooping must also be
- enabled. This will ensure that the color palette on both the graphics
- and overlay cards are properly initialized. Refer to your system
- documentation for instructions on how to do this (for many PCI motherboards,
- the system CMOS provides a user accessible switch to enable palette
- snooping).

- When operating in Windows with the mach32 drivers, the driver must be
- directed to load the VGA palette on the overlay card. This is
- accomplished by adding VGADAC=ON to the [DISPLAY] section of the SYSTEM.INI.
-
- ****************************
-
- 12.0 Features Changes
-
- - New VESA 75Hz Refresh Modes:
-
- ATI has adopted the 75Hz vertical refresh rate modes which have been
- recently standardized by the Video Electronics Standards Association
- (VESA). Where applicable, these new modes will replace the previous
- 76Hz modes at 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768 and the 74Hz mode at
- 1280x1024.
-
- In addition, new 90Hz and 100Hz modes are now supported on 2MB VRAM
- mach32 graphics cards. To access these new modes, use the following
- procedure:
-
- To access any of these modes, use the following steps:
-
- 1. Run the "INSTALL" program by inserting Disk #1 of the supplied mach32
- disks into the appropriate disk drive and run the INSTALL program.
- 2. From the Main Selection Menu, select Set Power-Up Configuration
- 3. Under the Set Power-Up Configuration menu, select Monitor Type
- 4. Under the Monitor Type menu, select either:
- VESA standard 75Hz
- High-Refresh 90Hz
- High-Refresh 100Hz
-
- Note: 90Hz and 100Hz selections apply only to current 2MB VRAM mach32
- graphics cards. Refer to the attached Mode Tables for supported
- resolutions and color depths.
-
- 5. Save your monitor selection by pressing <F10>
- 6. From the Main Selection Menu, re-select Set Power-Up Configuration
- 7. Under the Set Power-Up Configuration menu, select Monitor Type
- 8. Under the Monitor Type menu, select the Custom... option
- 9. For each resolution, you must specify the vertical refresh rate.
- You will notice that the refresh rate which you have specified in
- step 4 will now be listed as an option, if it is available at that
- resolution.
-
- WARNING! If the box outline in the Adjustment Screen becomes scrambled,
- press < Esc > immediately to exit, then try a lower refresh rate.
-
- For further information on using the Custom option, refer to the Monitor
- and Video Modes chapter of your User's Guide.
-
- Note: Your existing refresh rates will remain unchanged (i.e. may
- continue to use 74 or 76Hz refresh) until you re-run INSTALL
- and select and save a new Monitor Type under Set Power-Up
- Configuration.
-

- - VDIF.EXE Utility:
-
- VDIF files are monitor definition files which conform to the VESA Display
- Information Format. They define parameters which provide optimal
- resolution and refresh rate for the specified monitor. If your monitor
- type is not already defined in the monitor list of the mach32 INSTALL
- program, having the VDIF file for your monitor will save you time.
- Please note that VDIF files are provided by your monitor manufacturer and
- they may not be available for all makes and models.
-
- VDIF.EXE is a mach32 software utility which takes a VDIF monitor
- definition file and converts it into an entry in the monitor list
- of the mach32 INSTALL program. For complete instructions on using
- VDIF.EXE, consult README.VDI in your mach32 Utilities subdirectory
- (default is C:\MACH32).

- - Memory Aperture:
-
- The Memory Aperture is not user configurable on ISA mach32 product.
-
- - Accelerated Video Playback:
-
- ATI Multimedia Video Acceleration now supports the accelerated
- playback of video clips based on the following compression schemes:
-
- Intel Indeo 2.1
- Intel Indeo 3.1
- Microsoft Video 1
- Microsoft RLE
- Cinepak

- 13.0 Reporting Problems
-
- If you experience any difficulties, open the file REPORT.TXT and complete
- the Problem Report form. REPORT.TXT is located on disk1 of the driver
- diskettes.
-
